A fit when…
- Your main website already lives elsewhere.
- You do not need a membership platform.
- You want to simplify the email publishing workflow.
Ghost is a publishing system with a website and membership tools. MailCheap is a narrower newsletter option. They overlap, but they do not replace the same things.
Research review: 26 October 2026 · By Yusuf Muritala · Desk research, not a hands-on test.
Keep Ghost in the running when your website and membership experience are central to the business. Consider MailCheap if you only need a hosted newsletter workflow and already have your website elsewhere. A cheaper sending tool is not automatically a cheaper publishing business.
Our view: draw a boundary around the work you are replacing. If Ghost is your website, archive, membership system and email channel, replacing only the email channel may leave most of the job untouched. If you already publish elsewhere and only need distribution, the comparison becomes more relevant. Include maintenance and migration effort in the decision.

Estimate MailCheap costs using your actual bill ↗Export and back up Ghost content as well as member data. MailCheap’s guide uses the members CSV for the subscriber transfer. That is separate from moving themes, content URLs, paid access and your site itself. Plan redirects and membership continuity before changing anything.
Keep your original export. Test subscriber fields, suppression status, sender identity and signup links before your first campaign. Run a small validation send and allow time for the new provider’s onboarding process. Do not cancel your existing service until the replacement works.
Yes. Both have open-source editions, under different licences. Self-hosting still involves infrastructure and maintenance; it is not a promise of zero operating cost.
The vendor comparison and Ghost’s current page label billing differently. We have withheld the monthly figure rather than treat an annual-billing price as monthly.
Not on a like-for-like basis. Check content management, themes, membership access and URL requirements separately from newsletter sending.
