MailCheap vs Buttondown

Buttondown and MailCheap both appeal to newsletter publishers. The decision turns on audience size, your writing preferences and the extras you actually need.

THE DECISION IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Two focused tools.
Different ways to price them.

Buttondown deserves consideration for small lists and a writing-first workflow. MailCheap becomes interesting when its included analytics and API/AI workflow match your needs. Add the specific Buttondown extras you need before comparing the complete monthly bill.

Our view: a modular price is neither inherently good nor bad. It is useful if you can skip most extras; less useful if several become essential. Build a short required-feature list and total the cost on each side. Do not penalize an optional feature you will never use, or assume you can drop one that supports your paid publication.

IF YOU DECIDE TO MOVE

Move the workflow.
Not just the addresses.

Export subscribers from Buttondown, retaining subscriber types and status information. Check paid-reader arrangements separately from contact status. Rebuild any archive-domain configuration and make an inventory of automations or integrations you expect to keep.

Keep your original export. Test subscriber fields, suppression status, sender identity and signup links before your first campaign. Run a small validation send and allow time for the new provider’s onboarding process. Do not cancel your existing service until the replacement works.
