SUBSTACK ALTERNATIVE

## MailCheap vs Substack

Substack makes sense when the publication and reader relationship are the product. MailCheap is worth considering when email supports a business you already run.

THE DECISION IN PLAIN ENGLISH

## A reader network, or a simpler sending tool?

For a free newsletter with no platform budget, Substack has the clear subscription-cost advantage. For a paid publication, evaluate the subscription experience and discovery network before trying to reduce software costs. MailCheap is not a direct replacement for native paid subscriptions.

Our view: decide where the business happens. If readers pay for access inside your publishing platform, that system is part of what you are buying. If your newsletter supports consulting, an online shop or another external offer, a dedicated sending tool may be enough. Do not count a lower software fee as savings until you have priced any replacement systems.

WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY CHOOSING

## Capabilities before compromises.

| Requirement | MailCheap | Substack |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hosted free option | No hosted free plan | Free to publish |
| Paid subscriptions | Not built in | 10% platform share, plus payment fees |
| Reader discovery | No built-in reader network | Substack app and discovery |
| AI/API workflow | MCP and API in paid plans | No public API in the vendor comparison |
| Self-hosting | Open source; infrastructure costs extra | No self-hosted edition |

 ### Read this before comparing prices.

Free means publishing without a platform subscription charge. Paid newsletters incur Substack’s 10% share and payment fees. MailCheap does not include paid subscriptions, so comparing its subscription price with that revenue share is not a like-for-like saving. WHO SHOULD CHOOSE WHAT?

IF YOU DECIDE TO MOVE

## Move the workflow. Not just the addresses.

Export from Subscribers using All columns. A contact export does not recreate a Substack community or paid publication. Before switching, map paid-reader access, archives and discovery traffic separately. Make a clear plan for what existing paying readers will receive.

Keep your original export. Test subscriber fields, suppression status, sender identity and signup links before your first campaign. Run a small validation send and allow time for the new provider’s onboarding process. Do not cancel your existing service until the replacement works.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

## Your questions, answered.

### Is MailCheap cheaper than Substack? +

Not for a free publication: Substack has no platform subscription charge. MailCheap starts at $19/month for hosting. For a paid publication, compare the whole membership setup, not just Substack’s percentage fee.

### Should I leave Substack just to avoid the 10% fee? +

Only after identifying a replacement for paid access, billing and the reader experience. MailCheap alone does not provide the same paid-newsletter product.

### When would you shortlist MailCheap? +

When email is a distribution channel for your existing business, you want its publishing/API workflow, and a hosted monthly fee fits your budget.
